The Restoration of Rangers Graves Project and the family of William Dunlop.

The Restoration of Rangers Graves Project and the family of William Dunlop, Rangers Football Club 1877.

A few years ago we located at Cathcart cemetery the plot of Rangers great William Dunlop. William played in that legendary Rangers team of 1877 and in 1881 wrote the first ever account of the birth of our Club. Unfortunately due to the passage of time since he passed the plot had disappeared behind trees, bushes and weeds which we cleared a few years ago.

Just recently to our total amazement William Dunlop’s Great Granddaughter Gillian and her husband Steven contacted us telling us that they had tried to locate the plot but without success.

We’re delighted to say that after two of our Restoration team Billy and Alison got to work in once again clearing the area we met with Gillian and Steven on Friday at the plot to allow them to pay their respects.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank both of them sincerely for their extremely generous donation to the Restoration Project.

William Dunlop.

“Thus ended their first match played at the latter end of May 1872 some two months after the inauguration of the club’’.

The words of Rangers player William Dunlop from his article The Rangers FC which he wrote so eloquently for the SFA Annual in 1881 using the pen name ‘True Blue’.
